You may dislike his style; you may even dislike the way he castigates. It’s also up to you whether or not you find him successful. The definition of success varies depending on the angle you look from. Eventually, one can reach the opinion “You are also right” for both alternatives. You may also invite saying “O my dear teacher, ‘get inside and recline like lions’”, following the example of some of our friends. Or, you may think with a lower voice inside you, “If only he would get inside and recline, and would not talk round the known party so much.” You might also reproach yourself for not having done so. You will not be in the wrong.
But, you can by no means disregard why Necmeddin Erbakan is wanted “to be removed”. You cannot deny it by any way. You cannot parry. This is the core of the issue. Those who want to remove him have no disagreement with his person. In their personal and private gatherings they even tell that they love him and find him likeable. The known focuses who want to remove him are enemies to his mission. They don’t look at him; they look at what and whom he represents. This is what they take as a basis when striking him out. They don’t bother with how well or how bad he represents, whether his style is like this or like that. According to the known focuses, Erbakan is guilty from the start because of his being a name that represents the “proper” vein against the party that is “out of place” in this country. He is guilty in advance and without any judgement. It’s no matter that the basics of the case remain unattended. Let him be condemned whatever the pretext may be. Let him just be struck out and punished for representing the national vein against the estranged “ideological state” vein. This is the problem. This vein is the one represented by the First Assembly that represented the national vein against the pro-western cadres.
Mr. Ali Şükrü, Mr. Hüseyin Avni Ulaş and Mr. Mehmet Akif (Ersoy) are his predecessors. All of them were punished for saying “I can’t dare to curse the past for the pleasure of the things to come!” Mr. Ali Şükrü was killed for the commander of the President’s Guards Topal Osman. Mr. Hüseyin Avni and Mr. Mehmet Akif were somehow stopped from speaking and underwent a treatment similar to a living person’s funeral. In 1925 General Kazım Karabekir represented the same vein. He also deserved punishment because he didn’t show “compliance” and escaped the gallows at the last moment. In 1931 Fethi Okyar represented the same vein even though he played a part in a sham scenario. It is not due to his person but because of his image, which opposed the official ideology, that the people supported him heartbreakingly. The price to be paid for receiving the people’s support in spite of the regime was a rather heavy one. And he was made to pay the price. Then Menderes came. He said, “It’s enough! The nation should have the last word!” Are you to remind the nation of its power and nobility! Are you to say that it is now the nation’s turn to speak! Go to the scaffold! Your main offence in this country is reminding the nation that it is a nation and instilling self-confidence into it; reminding the nation of its power; winning the nation’s love. Is it a childish or an ignoble claim? Is what I am saying a cheap, malign assertion having no significance? These are in compliance with the procedure. Here also belongs that typical example of how such things are done: “Hang him, the grounds will come afterwards.” So he was arrested and hanged. In actual fact, it was not Adnan Menderes that was hanged. It was the nation’s power that was hanged. It was the nation’s honour that was hanged. It was the nation itself that was hanged. He was followed by Demirel and Özal. Demirel inherited the national vein. He grew up by living on that legacy. The nation didn’t even wonder about the personality of the individual who emerged by leaning upon this vein. What would have changed if it had done so is a separate issue. Every election was an opportunity for the nation to take “revenge” and it was only of secondary importance who would be on display in the window. Mr. Süleyman “grew up” by sticking to this very vein. Afterwards he relinquished and cut the vein which had reared him, but that’s a different topic. Perhaps he thought it was the only way he could escape the punishment for being connected to this vein. Indeed it was so. It was only Bayar and him who would not get struck out in spite of castigating and angering the known focuses. They both have their credentials originating from one and the same place. Turgut Özal paid a heavy price for representing this vein. This is the secret that is behind his death. And now it is Necmeddin Erbakan. Despite all of his mistakes and faults he is the most original and the most proper member of this vein. Look at the links of this chain and you will see a trend. This is the trend of return to the essence. Necmeddin Erbakan’s link in this trend represents the link in which the return to the essence forms acceleration. And this is the major crime in the eyes of the known focuses. Dear teacher Erbakan is paying for this crime now. He is paying for being an original link in the national chain, for openly siding with the people against “the government” that is stolen from the people. His guilt is fixed. We are all witness to this: He has remained faithful to the values making this people a nation and he has stood by the values making this country homeland. He refused to join the group of those who look at his values from an orientalist perspective. And this is an unforgivable crime in the eyes of some. Dear teacher is suffering for this crime. The rest is nonsense. When you see a day on which the one who is a link in the national chain does not suffer, you can judge that the nation has overcome its adversity.
